What is Hallmark?

Hallmark is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles. Hallmarks are thus official marks used in many countries as a guarantee of purity or fineness of precious metal articles. The principle objectives of the Hallmarking Scheme are to protect the public against adulteration and to obligate manufacturers to maintain legal standards of fineness. In India, at present two precious metals namely gold and silver have been brought under the purview of Hallmark.

Q1. What is HUID, a 6-digit
alphanumeric code?

Hallmark unique identification number is a six-digit alphanumeric code consisting of numbers and letters. Hallmark used to have 4 digits. With the fitness grade and lp of this number, a buyer can get all the information related to jewellery. Jewellers are required to upload this information on the portal of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

 

Q2. What is the difference between HUID and Hallmark?

Under HUID you can get information about your Jewellery more
transparently compared to hallmarking. With the help of HUID, you can identify your jewellery online. This facility was not under hallmarking. Under this new system, every piece of jewellery will
have a unique number. Through the HUID number, you will be able to know which jeweller has made your jeweller. Along with this, you will be able to know the purity of your jewellery and its weight. Earlier the weight of the jewellery was not mentioned under hallmarking but through achieved you may know the weight also.

 

Q3. Can the HUID be copied and applied to another piece of Jewellery?

The HUID will be different for each piece of jewellery. There is a ring the hallmark unique identification will tell you that the jewellery is a ring. The GUIDE will give details such as its weight color and which jewellery made this jewellery. If there is any kind of deficiency in this jewellery, then the jewellery will be fully responsible for it.
